Tips That Actually Help

Diversify your team early. Hoenn is heavy on Water, Ground, and Rock types. A Grass or Electric Pokémon caught before the third gym makes a real difference.
Save before every legendary encounter. Rayquaza waits at the top of Sky Pillar; Groudon and Kyogre appear during the weather crisis at Sootopolis City. If you faint them, only Rayquaza will reappear after the credits.
Designate one Pokémon as your HM carrier. Surf, Fly, Dive, and Strength are all required to reach parts of Hoenn. Teaching them to one Pokémon you keep off your battle team frees every other moveslot for real moves.
The Battle Frontier is designed to beat you. Each of the seven facilities runs near-optimal AI, and losing early is expected. Studying what outplayed you is the real endgame.
