GIRP is a grueling, physics-based rock climbing game designed by Bennett Foddy. Instead of using traditional directional controls, you have to type the specific keyboard letters that correspond to the rings scattered across the cliff face. As you reach for each hold, you must physically hold down the key to maintain your grip while searching for the next letter to grab.
The real challenge begins once you have a firm hold on a couple of rings. To ascend further, you need to use the Shift, Control, or Space keys to flex your climber’s muscles and pull yourself upward. This simple but intentionally awkward control scheme turns a basic climb into an intense test of finger dexterity, as you twist your hands across the keyboard to avoid falling into the rising water.
Controls
- Keyboard Letters (A-Z): Press and hold the letter corresponding to a ring on the cliff to grab and hold onto it.
- Shift / Ctrl / Space: Flex your arms to pull your body upwards toward the rings you are holding.
Tips that actually help
- Plan your hand placement: Look ahead at the letters you’ll need to grab next. If you cross your fingers on your physical keyboard, you’re much more likely to slip up and release the wrong key.
- Use momentum: Try to flex and reach for the next ring while your climber is still swinging upwards. Gravity is your biggest enemy.
- Stabilize before you stretch: Sometimes the best move is to secure your grip on two solid rings and let your character stop swinging before making a risky reach.
