Mahjong is the classic tile-matching solitaire game: a board of 144 tiles, each carved with a Chinese character or symbol, stacked in overlapping layers. The goal is simple to state and satisfying to chip away at — clear every tile by matching identical pairs, one pair at a time, until the board is empty.
Only tiles that are “free” can be matched — a tile counts as free when it isn’t covered by another tile and has at least one long side (left or right) open, not blocked by a neighboring tile. That single rule is what turns the game into a puzzle: early moves are easy, but as the board thins out you have to plan which pairs to clear first so you don’t accidentally seal off a matching tile underneath a pile. There’s no clock running, so a round is as much about quiet pattern-spotting as it is about speed.
Controls
Click a tile with the mouse on desktop, or tap it with a finger on phone and tablet, then click or tap its matching partner to remove both. The game works the same way on any device — there’s no separate touch scheme to learn.
Tips that actually help
- Clear tiles from the outer edges and top layers first. Anything stacked underneath stays locked until the tiles above or beside it are gone, so digging into the center too early can trap pairs you’ll need later.
- Scan the whole board before committing to a match. Identical tiles are often sitting on opposite sides of the layout, not next to each other, so a slow sweep beats clicking the first free tile you spot.
- If you get stuck with no obvious free pairs left, take a breath and re-check the edges of each layer — a tile that looked blocked a minute ago may have opened up after your last few matches.
