Refuge Solitaire brings a strategic twist to the classic Crescent layout. Instead of just shifting cards between piles, you are tasked with sorting two full decks into eight central foundations—four building up from the Ace, and four building down from the King. It is a slow-burn puzzle that demands careful planning, as moving cards within the tableau requires them to be of the exact same suit and adjacent in rank.
What sets this variant apart are the limited refuge spots. These act as your safety valves, giving you temporary empty cells to hold blocking cards while you reorganize the messy outer ring. Because you are constantly trying to dig out the buried Aces and Kings, every move feels like carefully untying a knot. It is perfect for players who want a more demanding, tactical solitaire session.
Controls
Play using your mouse or touch screen. Click and drag a card to move it to a valid position in the tableau, a foundation pile, or an empty refuge spot. You can also double-click or double-tap a card to instantly send it to the foundation if it is a valid move.
Tips
- Clear columns early: Focus on emptying a tableau pile to create a free space. An empty column can be used to hold any card, giving you much more flexibility than the limited refuge spots alone.
- Protect your refuge spots: Treat the refuge cells as temporary layovers, not permanent storage. If you fill them up too early without a plan to empty them, you will quickly become trapped.
- Match your foundations: Try to keep your ascending and descending foundation piles roughly even. If you build up one foundation much faster than the others, you might lock away cards you need to build sequences in the tableau.
