Toxic is a 2007 Nitrome platformer: plant timed bombs to blast through factory walls, dodge acid and lasers, and reach the exit in 20 levels.
Toxic
Toxic is a 2007 platformer from Nitrome that drops you into a robot factory as a lone worker in a yellow hazmat suit, armed with nothing but a stockpile of bombs. The goal on each of the 20 levels is simple to state and hard to pull off: blast a route through the factory’s stone floors and walls and reach the red teleporter before the toxic runoff, guards, or the level’s other hazards get you first.
The pace is slower and more deliberate than most run-and-jump platformers. Bombs take a few seconds to go off, so most of the challenge is timing a detonation to open a wall exactly when you need it, not mashing buttons. Later levels stack in new hazards — spinning lasers, leaking pipes that drip acid, and pools of acid at the bottom of pits that kill on contact — so the puzzle of which wall, which bomb, and which order gets tighter the further you go.
Controls
- Left / Right arrow keys — move
- Up arrow — jump
- Down arrow — duck
- Space bar — plant a bomb
This is an old Flash game running through an HTML5 emulator, so it’s built around a keyboard — plan on playing at a desk rather than on a phone.
Tips that actually help
- Basic bombs take about five seconds to explode — plant one, then get clear before you need the wall it’s about to open.
- Match the bomb to the job: mega bombs clear a wider hole, sticky bombs can be stuck to a wall or ceiling before they go off, and drill bombs blast straight down, which helps when you need to drop through a floor instead of tunneling sideways.
- Acid pooled at the bottom of a pit is an instant kill — treat any drop as one-way until you can see solid ground underneath it.
- Don’t linger near your own bomb’s blast radius. It’s easy to open a wall and get caught in the same explosion you set.
