Command British or German troops along a WWI front line in Warfare 1917, training units and calling in artillery to break enemy morale or seize ground.
Warfare 1917
Warfare 1917 puts you in command of a WWI army along a single scrolling front line, where the fight is won trench by trench rather than in one big rush. Queue up riflemen, machine gunners, assault troops, and eventually tanks and sharpshooters from the unit bar, then push them forward as the front line shifts back and forth between your side and the enemy’s. Every unit has its own cost and cooldown, so how you pace your spending decides whether your line advances or gets ground down.
You can take either the British or the German side, and the roster of units and support fire available to you grows as the campaign goes on, mirroring how the real war escalated — artillery barrages and mustard gas strikes become options once you’ve unlocked them. A battle ends when one army’s morale meter is emptied, or when its progress bar reaches the far end of the map, whichever happens first.
Controls
Warfare 1917 is played entirely with the mouse. Click a unit icon along the bottom bar to train it, and click a support-weapon icon once it’s off cooldown to call in artillery or a gas strike. There’s no keyboard input to learn — the pace of the match is set by how you manage your unit queue and cooldown timers.
Tips that actually help
- Don’t spam your cheapest unit. Machine gunners hold a defensive line better than riflemen, while assault troops and tanks are what actually break a stalled front.
- Support weapons like artillery and gas take a while to recharge, so save them for the moment you need to break a stalemate rather than firing the instant they’re ready.
- Watch the enemy’s morale meter as closely as the front line itself — grinding morale down can end a battle before you’ve captured much ground at all.
- Expect a limited roster in the opening battles. Stronger units and support options unlock as the campaign progresses, so early losses often come down to timing, not strategy.
Warfare 1917 suits players who like their strategy on the slower, more tactical side rather than twitch-reflex action — a good fit if you enjoy build-and-push games with a bit of WWI history baked into how the roster unlocks.
