Galaga is the legendary 1981 arcade space shooter that defined wave-based survival action. Taking command of a lone starfighter at the bottom of the screen, your objective is to clear endless waves of insectoid alien fleets before they swoop down and destroy your ship. Unlike simpler fixed shooters, enemies here do not just march back and forth—they enter the arena in sweeping, looping formations and break rank to launch high-speed diving strikes directly at your position.

The defining mechanic of Galaga is its risk-versus-reward ship capture system. Flagship Boss Galagas can deploy a tractor beam to pull your starfighter into enemy captivity. If you sacrifice that life, spawn a replacement ship, and shoot down the capturing boss while it dives, your captured vessel is rescued and docks alongside your ship. Flying a Dual Fighter doubles your projectile spread and damage output, but it also doubles your target profile against incoming plasma fire and suicide dives.

Controls

  • Left / Right Arrow Keys or A / D: Move your starfighter horizontally along the bottom of the screen.
  • Spacebar or Z: Fire blasters at incoming alien waves.

Tips for Higher Scores

  • Pick Off Enemies During Entry: Swarms enter from the top corners in fixed paths before settling into formation. Firing early lets you destroy entire enemy groups before they begin aggressive dive attacks.
  • Rescue Your Ship for Dual Firepower: Intentionally allowing a Boss Galaga to beam up your ship when you have spare lives in reserve is often worth the risk. Once retrieved, double blasters make clearing subsequent waves and bonus stages significantly easier.
  • Save Captured Ships from Dives Only: Shoot the Boss Galaga when it is diving down toward you. If you hit it while it rests passively at the top of the formation, your captured ship will turn hostile instead of joining you.
  • Memorize Challenging Stage Patterns: Every few stages, a non-lethal bonus round tests your aim against 40 fast-moving targets. Learn where the entry loops originate so you can sweep blasters across the entry path for a perfect 10,000-point bonus.
