Super Mario Bros is Nintendo’s 1985 side-scrolling platformer — eight worlds, thirty-two levels, one goal: get Mario the plumber from the left edge of the screen to the flagpole on the right while Bowser’s Mushroom Kingdom does everything it can to stop you. You run and jump through grasslands, underground caves, underwater stages, and castle fortresses, collecting power-ups and stomping enemies to reach Princess Peach.
A session moves with momentum: run fast and the game opens up; walk cautiously and the time limit starts pressing. Early worlds introduce the pieces — stomp a Goomba, kick a Koopa shell, crack open a ? block — and later worlds tighten the timing until those pieces need to snap together quickly. Getting through all eight worlds your first time takes patience; doing it cleanly takes some study of the layouts.
Controls
- Arrow keys — move left/right; down crouches or enters pipes
- Z or Space — jump; hold longer for a higher arc
- X — hold to sprint; shoot fireballs as Fire Mario
- Enter — start / pause
On mobile, on-screen buttons cover the same functions.
Tips that help
- Hold X almost everywhere. Sprint builds the momentum you need for wide gaps in later worlds — walking leaves you short on jumps that look clearable but aren’t.
- Kicked shells have range. A shell bouncing down a corridor clears multiple enemies, but it ricochets off walls and comes back. Either carry it or make sure the lane ahead is open before you kick.
- Check unmarked brick blocks. Most ? blocks give coins or power-ups, but certain unmarked brick blocks hide 1-UP mushrooms. The one in World 1-1 sits above the tall staircase near the level exit.
- World 1-2 has a warp zone. Near the exit, jump on top of the tall pipe and then up onto the ceiling bricks — walk right along the ceiling and you’ll find pipes that skip directly to World 2, 3, or 4.
