Avalanche
Avalanche is an arcade slope-runner developed by Nitrome where you steer a penguin on a wooden sled down a steep mountain, trying to stay ahead of a massive wall of snow crashing down behind you. The terrain drops off quickly, requiring sharp reflexes to navigate bumpy slopes, steep cliffs, and sudden obstacles strewn across the snowfield.
Every downhill run forces you to balance speed and stability. Accelerating gets you further ahead of the avalanche, but high speeds make it harder to react to trees, boulders, and unexpected drop-offs. Landing jumps smoothly keeps your momentum going, while hitting obstacles slows you down enough for the snow wall to catch up.

Tips for Staying Ahead of the Snow
- Master the Double Jump: Double jumping is essential for clearing large rock clusters and wide crevices. Save your second jump until the peak of your first arc to maximize distance.
- Manage Your Downhill Speed: Don’t hold the forward key continuously. Maintain enough speed to outrun the snow, but ease off when approaching dense tree lines or tight jumps.
- Grab Speed Boosters: Keep an eye out for rocket sled pickups along the trail. Grabbing one gives you a temporary speed surge to put safe distance between you and the avalanche.
- Recover Quickly From Stumbles: If you clip a rock or tree, immediately press the accelerate key to regain lost speed before the snow wall engulfs you.
